Maurizio Levak

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maurizio Levak was born in Pula in 1967. He graduated in History and Croatian Language and Literature from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Pula in 2000. He earned his Master’s degree in 2005 and his PhD in 2009 from the Department of History at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. Since 2000, he has been teaching at the Department of History of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, covering general and regional medieval history and supervising students’ methodological practice. Since 2023, he has served as Head of the Department of History. His main field of research is medieval history of the northern Adriatic region, particularly the early Middle Ages. He is the author of numerous scientific and professional articles, as well as encyclopedic entries. He has co-authored several books and published one monograph independently: Slaveni vojvode Ivana. Kolonizacija Slavena u Istri u početnom razdoblju franačke uprave (The Slavs of Duke Ivan: Colonization of the Slavs in Istria during the Early Period of Frankish Rule, 2007). He participates in scientific and professional conferences both in Croatia and abroad, presenting the results of his research. Levak is a co-founder and long-time president of the Istrian Historical Society and editor of the first 13 issues of the scientific journal Histria. Since 2016, he has been the director of Istrapedija, a regional online encyclopedia.
