Island-Ghetto-Asylum

The programme Island – Ghetto – Asylum is based on the topic of the 21st Book Fair(y) in Istria that took place in 2015. It aligned with the start of the great refugee crises that sent shockwaves through our continent. Once free-minded Europe transformed simultaneously into a fortified island, ghetto and asylum, a space of closed borders, new fences, and rising xenophobia. From that point onward, the manifold programme Island-Ghetto-Asylum encompasses roundtables, book presentations of contemporary authors, exhibitions, films, and art installations, has presented a designated space for discussing contemporary positions of migrants and asylum seekers and the new ghettoization of freedom of speech and thought. It gives the stage of the Book Fair(y) both to the conceptual exploration of the island – viewed as a utopian place and a paradigm of the poetic and literary space – and discussion of the current events and processes, including topics such as self-ghettoization of intellectuals, censorship, and self-censorship.
